Cymric Cat

The Fluffy Tailless Wonder from the Isle of Man

🐾 Cymric Cat: The Fluffy Tailless Wonder from the Isle of Man 🐾

Elegant, affectionate, and full of fluff, the Cymric (pronounced kim-rick) is the long-haired sibling of the Manx cat. Known for its unique taillessness, plush coat, and strong yet cuddly build, the Cymric is a rare and lovable breed with a fascinating history and a sweet personality to match.

🏝️ Origins and History

The Cymric shares its roots with the Manx, a naturally occurring breed from the Isle of Man, a small island in the Irish Sea. The tailless gene first appeared centuries ago among local island cats and quickly spread due to the isolated population.

The long-haired version of the Manx—what we now call the Cymric—began gaining recognition in the 1960s and 70s, particularly in Canada and the United States. Some cat associations consider it a separate breed, while others view it as a variety of the Manx.

🐈 Appearance

The Cymric is medium to large in size, compact, and powerfully built. Despite their bunny-like appearance, they’re athletic cats with excellent jumping abilities.

Defining features include:

  • Rounded body, with a broad chest and strong hindquarters
  • Long, thick double coat that is soft and plush—ideal for cuddles
  • Large, round eyes that give a sweet and alert expression
  • Tailless or partially tailed—ranging from completely tailless (rumpy) to short stubs (rumpy riser, stumpy, or longy)
  • Comes in many colors and patterns, including solids, tabbies, calicos, and more

Their back legs are longer than the front, giving them a distinct arched appearance when standing.

😻 Temperament and Personality

Cymrics are calm, loving, and incredibly devoted to their families. They form strong bonds and enjoy being close to their humans—sometimes acting more like dogs than cats.

Why people love them:

  • Affectionate and loyal, often following you from room to room
  • Gentle and good with children, making them a great family pet
  • Playful and intelligent, they enjoy puzzle toys and fetch
  • Quiet and well-mannered, but may chirp or trill when excited
  • Adaptable and social, they typically get along well with other pets

Cymrics enjoy a balance of calm snuggles and bursts of play, often racing around the house with powerful bunny-hops.

🧴 Care and Grooming

Thanks to their thick coat, Cymrics require regular grooming to stay in top condition.

Care tips:

  • Brush 2–3 times a week to prevent tangles and matting
  • Routine vet checkups to monitor spinal health (related to the tailless gene)
  • Keep them warm and comfortable—especially if completely tailless
  • Provide mental stimulation and safe climbing options

They are generally healthy, but breeders carefully screen for Manx Syndrome, a condition affecting tailless cats, which responsible breeding helps avoid.
